Marshal Zen Garden (少帥禪園)

On October 14, 2013 by admin

Marshal Zen Garden, formerly known as Shann Garden Resort (少帥禪園) is where the influential military leader Marshal Zhang Xueliang was confined to house arrest for 26 years following the Chinese Civil War. Sometimes referred to as Peter Hsueh Liang Chang, the “Young Marshal” ruled Manchuria following his father’s assassination by the Japanese in 1928. Marshal Zhang was the instigator of the Xi’an Incident, where he arrested Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-sheck, forging a truce between the Nationalists and Communists, and a united front against the Japanese. After Chiang Kai-sheck was released, Zhang and Chiang both traveled to the Chinese capital, and once away from Zhang’s loyal troops, Chiang Kai-sheck returned the favor by placing Zhang under house arrest. Originally confined to a home in the mainland, the Kuomintang’s retreat to Taiwan forced Zhang to be relocated as well, and the majority of his sentence was served in this property in Beitou, Taipei. Zhang was eventually set free after Chiang Kai-sheck’s death in 1975.

Today the property is a popular tourist destination, where visitors come to view the gardens, enjoy scenic fine dining, or soak in the hot springs. There are 15 luxury private hot spring rooms, complete with hot spring bath overlooking the valley, shower area, and sofabed. For those just looking to get their feet wet, there are public outdoor foot bath. Course meals in the restaurant start at NT1,200 and light meals or afternoon tea can be enjoyed in the Tea House.

  • Thank you! Very informative!

Is there a place where those in wheelchair can wait while the rest of the group explore the place? Thanks again!

Unfortunately, this place is not very accessible for those in a wheelchair as the stairs at the entrance are very steep.
