Canadian Dining in Taipei: Whalen’s (味鄰)

On April 25, 2014 by admin

“So what is Canadian food anyway?”
For Canadian expats living in Asia, this is a question that one must face on a regular basis.
The explanations become smoother with repetition, but it often involves a long history lesson that most would like to avoid when possible.

Luckily for those living in Taipei, a convenient answer opened up in the summer of 2012. Now when the question is posed, Canadians can simply take their curious colleagues or friends to a scrumptious brunch at Whalen’s. Facing the question is no longer a hassle, instead it is the perfect excuse to eat great food more often.

The menu at Whalen’s consists of all the Canadian favorites such as Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, bagels, burgers, quiches, and yes of course, Pountine, the French-Canadian specialty of french fries topped with gravy and a healthy portion of cheese. Generally, each entree comes with a choice of two sides (fries, fruit, yogurt & granola, or salad) as well as a drink, which allows for a complete meal at very reasonable prices. There are also a number of take-out specials for people on the go, such as wraps and a coffee for just NT$180.

Whalen’s can get particularly crowded around brunch time on the weekends, so it’s best to make a reservation ahead of time, or be prepared to wait.

As an expat Canadian (alas in the U.S. not Taiwan) I’ll need to check this place out on my upcoming trip. Hadn’t known about it on all my earlier visits.
